About the Project

The Bowden Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Bowden name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the SURNAME name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Bowden's), by time period (18th Century Bowden's), or by topic (Bowden DNA, Bowden Occupations, Bowden Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

To add a profile to the Study and Treworgy Category add the following text:

Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Hi Narelle! What an unusual name! Thank you for posting your story, I am afraid I can't add anything. but will direct you to our other members Paul and Phllip. My Bowdens start in North Carolina and migrate to Missouri. Thank you for your story though and good luck!
Hi Donna

I am descended from William Bowden from Benenden Kent England who migrated to Australia in 1838 with his wife Elizabeth nee Godfrey and their children. Sadly a son died en route, Elizabeth died in quarantine in Sydney NSW, and another son died within a few weeks of arrival. William raised the remainder of his large family in the Hunter Valley region of NSW. The furthest we can go back to date with any certainty is to Job Bowden who was born Benenden in 1740 and married Elizabeth Hinkley. My DNA previously showed strong links to Devon and Cornwall so I did think that was to the many Bowden families from those counties, but the latest updates don’t show this. They now show my dna centred in south east England. I would love to be able to explore this further. Good luck with your research, Narelle

Hi Donna,

Not sure where your Bowdens come from but I have Bowden ancestry in Cheshire, England. My gr grandmother was born Elizabeth Bowden in 1851 in Manchester, but I can trace back a further 3 generations first in Liverpool and then going further back in Tarporley, Cheshire. Not sure if it's of interest. there is a town in Cheshire called Bowdon (slightly different spelling) - don't know if that's where the name might originate? Regards, good luck with your research, Paul

So good to hear from you Paul! My Bowdens, I believe, came to MO from NC around 1850. I ave not researched beyond that.
Paul - we have a sub-category for English profiles. Please add your profiles to that category! Maybe you can find a connection!
Phil- So glad to hear from you! I don't know how to answer your question. I have no problem with you adding a subcategory. I was assigned the leader of this name study by default I guess. I am the only person who had created Bowden profiles, some with pictures. Feel free to add anything you want!

Hi Donna,

My great-grandaunt Sarah Pepperrell married a Thomas Bowden in 1859 in Kenton, Devon. They had eight children which I have found both birth & baptism sources for but I have not created their profiles yet.

Could I add a sub-category Devon, Bowden Name Study to your Bowden Name Study or would you prefer that I just link to the existing Bowden Name Study category?

Regards and good luck with making connections

Phil
